For Missourians sentenced to state prisons, the Department of Corrections manages 21 correctional centers – 19 for men and two for women. Each institution is assigned a security custody level number — 1, 2 or 5. Custody level 1 is minimum security, custody level 2 is medium security, and custody level 5 is maximum security.
